Oh happy day! Wonderful things are going to happen now, folks! I’m so happy.
Last night, we went to the Dem Headquarters Party in Century City. This place had 1500 capacity and apparently 15,000 people rsvp’d! They weren’t letting anyone in when we came. But we snuck in through the service entrance (James won’t ever take no for an answer)
It was so awesome! Everyone was so happy and excited. I was so glad to be a part of it.
Mayor Villaraigosa was there, Ludacris and some white guy rapped, but best of all… Shepard Fairey made a huge collage while this dj mixed some great tunes!
He makes the best collages I have ever seen. sigh.
Joy. Happy days are here again!
I will admit that I am way behind here. I don’t ever watch the news, I read it. But normally, articles centered on athletes, I tend to ignore, which is what I did when I say Michael Vick on yahoo news yesterday. I assumed it was another athlete getting caught on steroids. I had no idea how serious this was.
For those of you who don’t know, Michael Vick has been indicted by a federal grand jury for “his alleged role in a dog fighting venture that operated from a Virgina property owned by the Atlanta Falcons quaterback”. Apparently he’s been involved in dog fighting since 2001, when he bought property to start the Bad Newz Kennels. This is where he bought pit bull puppies, trained them to fight, and hosted dog fighting events, with purses as high as $26000.00. The details are gory. At least 8 dogs that didn’t perform well or lost matches were executed by various means, including, drowning, hanging and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground. One they electrocuted.
Does anyone else find this utterly despicable? I cried when I heard the news today. How can there still be people in this world who would do these things to animals? Aren’t dogs supposed to be man’s best friend? But you train them to be killer dogs and set them against one another and they fight until they can’t any more or one of them dies. And then the one that loses the fight, you torture to death? And people watch this shit? These puppies are loving and trusting and they twisted it into something horrible and disgusting.
Don’t they always say that kids who torture animals end up being serial killers? So what will happen to these sick bastards? I believe that if Vick gets charged he will face up to one year in prison. One year!!! One year for a man who worked this nasty little scheme, this illegal scheme for almost 6 years.
Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states, it is a felony in 49 states (what’s up Idaho?) But in most states it’s only a misdemeanor for being a spectator at a dog fight. But we can change that. Here is a list of the state laws for dog fighting. And here is more information about dog fighting from the Humane Society of the US. Write to your legislators and tell them that it should be a felony to watch dog fighting. These people support a criminal activity and it’s their participation that still makes this “sport” profitable.
At least I have one consolation. Nike and Reebok took away their endorsement deals this week.
This past weekend was jam packed! I went to Vegas to visit my family. Mostly it was to say goodbye to my Grandmother. She is going back to Denmark tomorrow and I won’t see her again until next year, when we all go back to the Philippines.
I hosted a stampin up party at my sister’s. That was fun. I got to meet most of the ladies of West Coast Trading Post. For pictures see here. The girls are really nice. I met my new best friend, Amber. She and I share a love of Somerset Studios and vintage art. We traded our ATC’s out. Love theme, so very cute. (I have to upload those pics to my flickr)
We played Harry Potter Scene it. I was totally kicking ass, but everyone ganged up on me and I lost like 4 turns in a row. Chris ended up winning. Whatever! (I would just like to put this out there – I rule Harry Potter!! If anyone out there is a big fan and wants to discuss theories, reply to this post so we can chat!)
Then we watched The Descent. That was way creepy. I couldn’t even go to sleep right away because I was so bothered by it. (my dad was really scared by it too; he left during the middle of it to “make coffee”; we found him hiding in the corner later) My dad and I stayed up and watched Elizabethtown. A completely unmemorable movie except for the very ending, when Kirsten Dunst makes this awesome scrapbook for Orlando Bloom. She tells him to go on a road trip by himself from Kentucky back to Oregon. She gives him this “map” which is an album filled with map details, cds, drawings and brochures of all the must see places on his way back. I kept thinking about how awesome that was and I have decided that, since I am always traveling to Las Vegas and back, I should do the same thing. I am very excited about it, because although most people would think the drive from Cali to Vegas is boring, there are many, many little details that string the whole trip together. Of course, this last trip I was driving solo, so I will have to wait until James and I go again and it’s so on!
I forgot the biggest news! When I was in Vegas, my mom and I went to see Barak Obama! Such excitement. It’s so awesome to be able to hear what these candidates have to say before the debates start. Oh man is he ever intelligent and charming and personable. He talks to an audience of 1000 (or more) like he was chatting over tea. He hit all the major points: getting the troops out of Iraq by March, paying teachers more, universal healthcare, global warming (alternative energy). I was really impressed with him. Look at the huge turnout.
We rallied on Wilshire and Western (right across from the Wiltern) chanting, “Out of Iraq Now!” & “Occupation has got to go”, marching from corner to corner, getting all the cars to honk for peace. It’s a great feeling to be a part of something and to get other people excited about something good too. It was sooooo cold outside. The wind was blowing so cold, my ears were hurting. I was a dummy and didn’t wear a beanie. For those of you in LA, there will be a huge protest on March 17 (the 4th Anniversary of the war) at noon, on Hollywood and Vine. Be there or be a war monger. No, just kidding!! Ooh! Speaking of the Wiltern, Gomez is playing next month. I am so excited!
This is a tank some guy made out cardboard boxes. Pretty cool!
It was great. I’m glad we went.
And then when I get home what is waiting for me, but a big box from my sister? What could it be??
But no crafting tonight. Tonight is the Thursday night line up and they are all new! Yay! Can’t wait. My Name is Earl and the Office, Scrubs and 30 Rock! Yes!
Wow. I just heard Dennis Kucinich on The Rachel Maddow Show on Air America Radio. What a brilliant man. He speaks so clearly his vision for getting america out of the hell hole that it is in now. And most importantly, he speaks for Peace. Here is a man who supports the troops and is willing to say the things that most Dems in office aren’t willing to say.
Now, we don’t know yet everyone who is running. And I haven’t heard everyone’s speak. Rest assured, I do love Clinton and Obama. People are saying that Barak Obama is JFK reincarnated. Eloquent and stirring. What a breath of fresh air after hearing this moron talk for the last 6 years. 6 YEARS! Has time flown so fast??!?
I voted for Kucinich in the last primary. And will most likely vote for him again. Here’s a funny little anecdote. While searching for Vegan/Vegetarian meals to serve at our wedding, our caterer suggested using VegNews. Looking through their archives, we found the meal served at Dennis Kucinich’s wedding. And we used some of his entrees. (Anyone remember the pecan encrusted portobello with roasted garlic polenta) Now there’s a man I can stand behind!
We have captured the House and are a hair’s breath away from winning the Senate! The people have voted and they have shown their true colors. I have waited so long for this moment. They can’t stop progress in this country, no matter how hard they try. We are ready for change! (well, I have been ready since November 2000, but who’s counting?)
What a party James and I had last night as we watched the news cycle through the numbers over and over again. My favorite woman, Nancy Pelosi is the new speaker of the house! I’ll drink to that! Us Californians no how it’s done.
That being said though, I have a bad feeling about the next few days. We will win the House, of course, and the Senate. But I think that Leiberman, the traitor that he is, will come into the Senate as an Independent and then change his affiliation to Republican, giving the Republicans back the leadership of the Senate, by 1!
I am already mentally preparing my hate letter to his office.
The more I think about it, the more scared I get that something bad will happen. George “Macaca” Allen has lost by 8132 votes and Burns has lost by even less, 3128. There will be recalls for Virginia and Montana. My only problem is that it will take too long. Americans seem to like instant gratification (the kind that tell you who won the Vote the night you leave the polling place). If we do a recount, then it could take a month and everyone will get bored and disinterested. Then when the Republicans claim victorious (after “losing” 5 or 6 thousand Dem ballots) the people won’t care. If that happens we should take to the streets!! Everyone, in every state. We cannot let them steal our votes again!
I just checked Ali Edward’s site. Her husband has won a seat as a State Rep. So happy for them!
Well, it’s back to work and back to poll watching! Keep your fingers crossed.
